Croton-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department was called to a house fire on Maple Street around 3:30 p.m. Monday and found the house in flames, with no one at home, the department said.
Due to a coordinated, aggressive interior fire attack, the fire was held to the kitchen and a second-floor room, and the neighboring house was saved but did sustain some damage from the radiant heat, the department said.
Sadly, five family cats perished in the blaze, but two foster cats escaped the flames.
Some 50 firefighters responded, including members from Ossining, Yorktown Heights, Buchanan, and Montrose fire departments, as well as EMS teams from Croton-on-Hudson, Ossining, and Peekskill.
The Westchester County Cause & Origin Team was on the scene, as well as Battalion 17, the Mutual Aid Coordinator.
The fire is under investigation.
